Comprehensive air traffic management for the El Dorado Airport

Success story: Switzerland, ILS to improve capacity and solve signal reflection

Indra, together with skyguide, have developed pioneering solutions such as the ultra-wide ILS Localizer for Zürich Airport and Reduced Coverage for Geneva Airport.

Zürich had experienced massive traffic growth and needed to increase the runway efficiency. We developed the world’s first 32-element ultra-wide localizer. As the localizer becomes wider, the sensitive area is narrower, which allows ILS holding points and movements of large aircraft (such as Airbus A380) closer to the runway under low-visibility operations. This resulted in a 20% runway capacity increase.

In Geneva, a new building in the surroundings would reflect the signals from the current ILS, seriously impacting signal performance, which meant Geneva Airport could no longer operate at normal levels under low-visibility conditions. The solution was a uniquely designed system with optimized signals to avoid reflections from the new building. This development was partly financed by EUROCONTROL, and enabled Geneva Airport to return to Category III performance in a matter of a few months.

Airlines reported that the so-called reduced coverage solution actually outperformed the previous system.

Success story: Full-IP Voice Program in Central America

Since 2015, Indra has deployed several GAREX 300 VCSs platforms within the voice switch renovation program requested by COCESNA (Central American Corporation for Air Navigation Services). These contracts required a modern, flexible and field proven system for air traffic communications with maximum operational flexibility by utilizing modular configuration concepts.

Each component of the system is a network node, which operates autonomously.

The first project was the installation of GAREX 300 in CENAMER ACC, which is responsible of the en-route and approach services in Honduras. Since it went live in 2015, users and engineers gladly welcomed the new capabilities offered by the IP technology.

Currently the program is still renovating not only VCS but also radios, network and recorders. Additionally, as one of the cores of Indra, the capability for a global operation with automation system has been included.

GAREX 300 VCS provides a seamless integration and smooth transition with new IP and former legacy environments.

   Solutions

Natively IP next-gen voice solution

Modernization of the control centers and international airports with full-VoIP VCS systems in Central America ACCs.

The solutions are built with purely IP voice switches but also able to be integrated to the existing legacy VCSs and communication infrastructure, easing the smooth migration towards IP.

In addition, the Controller Working Position was integrated with COCESNA’s Automation System (AIRCON), in terms of common sectorization.

   Benefits

Interoperability, digitalization and simplification in Central American air traffic control

GAREX 300 provides COCESNA with short, mid and long-term benefits thanks to:

   -   Immediate communications between controllers and resource sharing across borders.

   -   Digital infrastructures and extensive use of commercial components to enable future virtual communication services.

   -   Easier transfer of flow and workload  reduction while maintaining the highest levels of air traffic.

   Results

Real-time adaptation to workload and contingencies

GAREX 300 integrates the powerful facility named airspace dynamic resectorization.

The feature provides the capability to dynamically reconfigure logical users (control sectors) to physical positions (Sector Control Units- SCU) at any moment.

Thus, the resources can be merged in one or more consoles in order to adapt to the changing operational traffic load.

Success story: IP Communications Network in Panama

Within the ATM infrastructure renovation program requested by AERONAUTICA (Civil Aviation Authority of Panama), Indra has installed in Panamá Howard APP/ACC the GAREX 300 VCS together with the automation system and the radios. The operative concept obtained with this installation is summarized as follows:

•   The new center allows unfolding the approach and route control to absorb more traffic and reinforce the position of its airports as a regional hub.

•   Controllers will rely on the latest generation Indra Air Automation and Communication system to order traffic with maximum efficiency.

•   Indra has deployed an IP communications system to make it easier for the CAA to continue improving and reinforce the air traffic system of Panama.

•   The system was installed in Howard, near to the Pacific International Airport, with the objective of establishing the communications in the approach to all the airports. With this new system, the workload of Albrook ACC has been drastically reduced. The GAREX voice switch installed in Howard APP/ACC is ready to take over the communications services for all Panama’s airspace in case of contingency.
